“You throw your weight upon my shoulders. As the pendulum reaches it’s Apex, will fate’s gaze realign, and put you in focus?”
Pendulum Studies. No.1
Today I, Tomorrow You
This project will address the audience as the perpetrator. A reflection on our collective responsibilities for justice, and the unjust.
Exploring the crushing weight of said situations, and questioning whether true absolution and justice is assured, expected or purely random. Today, will I suffer at your hands, before tomorrow you fall victim to karmic forces.
This work will combine projected images and video loops filmed and arranged by Creswick Collective, and allow the musicians to respond in real time through structured improvisation.
It will be a 45 minute work, and ideally housed in a small space where the music and projections can act as a complete immersion in concept and performance.
The projections will be laptop controlled from stage to integrate a seamless conversation between music, effects and improvisation.
Video Reel
The projected video will take on a different, experimental and abstract tone compared to work I have previously filmed. I am looking forward to treating Art, Not Apart as a perfect avenue to develop my artistic practice and videography and combine with my music.
Audio Examples
The work will be reminiscent of the below, combining improvisation and reactive playing to the projections. This work will be composed for a Quintet comprising Bass, Piano, Drums, Lead Guitar, Vocals and all musicians will be implementing effects into their playing and improvisation.
Projection Concepts
These are several concepts for projection. Of note is that it will be a singular projection, not multiple projections.
Budget
Below is a budget that includes some in-kind support that I will be hoping for, or is space/festival dependant
Total Cost - $1500
Musicians $1500
Note - These are based on 2 x performances of 45 minutes each at Art Not Apart, and 1 rehearsal of 3 hours.
Keys - (TBC) - $300
Vocals (Myself) - $300
Drums (TBC) - $300
Guitar (TBC) - $300
Bass (TBC) - $300
Note - These rates are in line with awards rates for rehearsals and performances of work
At Cost to Artist -
I would also like to have the performances recorder w/video/sound (direct from board) and if this project is successful I will seek external funding to have Matthew McGuigan of Hospital Hill Records in Sydney Record this work.
Technical $ In kind
Uplighting for musicians - $ In kind
Sound Engineer - $ In kind
Rehearsal Space - Day before rehearsal space (Hopefully inkind if possible to set-up rehearse in space for rehearsal??)
Projection Manager - The projector will be operated by laptop from stage by myself in order to interact with the music.
Technical Advice - $ In Kind - I have several lighting and production engineers who i can consult on the technical aspects of projector work,
and I will be drawing on this for the development of this project.
Projector - This may not be in the standard technical rider, so will need to be advised on the cost of this. Given discussions with the curators of Art Not Apart, it appeared I may not need to include these in the costings above.
Rigging for Projector Sheets - This is room specific, as some of the rooms I am interested in already have projector screens. However, without technical advice from the venue managers, it is difficult to assess the material requirements for this. If possible I would like this to be a TBC expense.
Chairs - I would prefer the audience to be seated for this, so if the performance were to take place in Mosaic room chairs would need to be brought in.
Ideal Space
As this work is space specific, it will only function as intended in particular spaces. Below are the 3 spaces that I think would best suit the work.
If you are into the concept/project, would love to talk further with you Michael about this!
